The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has suspended the remaining members of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) National Executive Board and National Executive Committee from all rugby administration and activities in the country.
The suspension, confirmed in a resolution passed on 9 September 2025, bars the officials from holding office under the ZRU until the next union elections. The SRC cited section 30 of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act (Chapter 25:15) as the legal basis for its decision.
According to the Commission, the move follows the ZRU’s failure to comply with section 29(8)(b) of the Act. A show cause order issued on 4 September 2025 led to the resignation of eight board members. With no representations filed by the remaining officials, the SRC invoked its powers to suspend them.
“The suspension shall remain effective until the next Zimbabwe Rugby Union elections,” the Commission said in its statement.
The SRC added that it will announce the strategic direction for Zimbabwe Rugby in due course.
This latest governance setback comes at a crucial moment for Zimbabwean rugby. Earlier this year, the Sables secured qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia — their first appearance at the tournament since 1991. While the achievement was widely celebrated, instability at the administrative level now risks disrupting preparations for the global showpiece, where Zimbabwe will be seeking to make a competitive return to the sport’s biggest stage.
