Former Malik Habil centre has officially called time on his rugby career, bringing to a close a journey defined by grassroots growth, club dominance, and deep personal reflection on life beyond the game.

Habil’s rugby journey began in 2009 at Kolanya Secondary School, where he first discovered his potential on the pitch. His standout performances earned him a move to Bungoma High School, a recognized rugby nursery, where he featured between 2011 and 2013, developing into a formidable midfield presence.

In 2014, he joined Kabras Sugar RFC, marking the start of a decorated club career. At Kabras, Habil became part of a dominant era that saw the Sugarmen rule Kenyan domestic rugby across multiple competitions.

During his stint, he won three Kenya Cup titles, playing a key role in Kabras’ supremacy in the 15s format. He also enjoyed success in the shorter version of the game, lifting the National Sevens Circuit once. His trophy cabinet further includes three Enterprise Cup titles and a Mwamba Cup winner’s medal, achievements that underline his impact at the club.

However, beyond the medals and matchday memories, Habil has made the difficult decision to step away from active rugby in pursuit of long-term stability.

Speaking exclusively to Two5four Rugby, he opened up on the realities that informed his retirement:

“I decided to call time on my rugby career to find stability and empower myself because there isn’t much financial security in the sport. Rugby gave me exposure and opportunities, but I felt it was time to focus on building my future off the pitch.”

He also offered advice to the current crop of players and those rising through the ranks:

“My advice to young players is to use whatever little they get from rugby wisely. Invest in yourself. Do technical courses even if your grades are not the best, skills will help you long after rugby.”

Habil joined Kisumu RFC during the 2023/24 season from Kabras and is now set to focus on farming at his rural home in Busia as he begins a new chapter away from the game.
