The Waridi Foundation on Saturday, September 27, hosted the 4th edition of the Lamu7s Rugby Tournament at Tiger grounds,Mpeketoni.
Twelve teams had registered, but logistical challenges saw only four participate. Malindi Turtles extended their dominance with a 12–0 victory, while Lamu7s, Mpeketoni Girls, and Young Cubs completed the lineup. For the first time, all teams received cash rewards, with the champions pocketing Ksh. 20,000 and the other sides earning Ksh. 5,000 each. The tournament drew over 1,000 fans, underlining rugby’s growing popularity along the Coast.
Deputy Governor Dr. Mubarak graced the event, pledging to equip local clubs with jerseys and training gear. Leaders Hon. Ndegwa, Hon. Maguathi, and Chief Advisor Susumila also committed to rugby development, with Susumila thrilling the crowd through live entertainment.
Coinciding with World Tourism Day, the tournament carried the theme “Sustainable Tourism.” The “Plant & Play” initiative saw players and partners plant 5,000 mangroves, conduct a town clean-up, and promote eco-tourism sites such as Pangani Forest and Lake Kenyatta.
Since its inception in 2017, Lamu7s has continued to nurture youth talent while positioning Lamu as a hub for sport and sustainable tourism.
