A cloud of uncertainty hangs over the fate of the abandoned Kenya Rugby Championship fixture between Mean Machine RFC and Mombasa RFC which was to be played on 7th March 2026, with the final outcome now hinging on a decision yet to be made by the university side.
According to a letter obtained by Two5Four dated 20th March, the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Appeals Council upheld the initial decision to award Mombasa RFC a 28-0 win following the failure of the match to take place in Nairobi earlier this month. However, the council overturned the docking of two points that had initially been imposed on Mean Machine.
The fixture had been called off after heavy flooding rendered the University of Nairobi grounds unplayable, with safety concerns raised over waterlogged sections, anthills, and a concrete obstruction on the pitch.
While the ruling largely maintains the original outcome, it introduces a crucial twist, offering Mean Machine an opportunity to have the match replayed in Mombasa. This, however, is conditional on the team agreeing to travel within two weeks of the decision.
Should Mean Machine opt against the trip, the result awarding Mombasa full points will stand.
The standings, however, paint a clearer picture of the limited stakes involved. Mean Machine had accumulated 21 points before being docked two, leaving them 9th place with 19 points, while Mombasa, who were on 19 points benefited from the awarded result and now sit 7th on the log with 24 points.
Even if the match is replayed, it is unlikely to have any significant impact on the playoff race. Homeboyz RFC currently occupy sixth place, the final playoff spot with 27 points, creating a gap that both Mombasa (7th) and Mean Machine (9th) are unlikely to bridge regardless of the outcome.
This leaves the ball squarely in Mean Machine’s court, with the club now expected to determine whether logistical, financial, and competitive considerations justify making the trip to the coast for a fixture with minimal bearing on the season’s final standings.
Two5Four understands that internal consultations are ongoing, with no official communication made yet regarding their position.
The publication will continue to follow up the matter as it develops.
Efforts to reach Mombasa RFC for comment were unsuccessful by the time of publication.
