Defending champions Strathmore Leos stormed into the Prinsloo 7s final with a ruthless 40-0 demolition of Catholic Monks in the first semifinal at Nakuru Athletic Club on Sunday.
Leos showed why they remain one of the most feared sides on the circuit, running in six unanswered tries in a match that was effectively over by halftime. Victor Mola got things going with a converted effort, before Nygel Amaitsa cut through the Monks defence to double the lead. By the time the half-time hooter sounded, Strathmore were comfortably 28-0 ahead, with Catholic Monks chasing shadows.
In the second half, there was no let-up. Amalemba completed his brace after a quick tap release, with Brian Mwenda slotting over the conversion to stretch the lead to 35-0. Samuel Wafula then crossed the whitewash late on to cap off an emphatic win that underlined Strathmore’s ambitions to retain their title.
The second semifinal was a far tighter affair as KCB edged Menengai Oilers 10-5 in a gripping contest. Samwel Asati gave the bankers the early advantage with a well-taken try, catching the Oilers defence off guard from a quick tap to send his side 5-0 up at the break.
Oilers, buoyed by a home crowd, found their rhythm in the second half and hit back through Samwel Mwaura, who crashed over to level the scores. However, Denis Abukuse’s conversion attempt went wide, leaving the tie hanging in the balance.
With extra time looming, Vincent Ongala delivered the decisive moment finding space on the outside and racing away to score the match-winner and send KCB into the final.
The result sets up a rematch of the Driftwood 7s final from the previous weekend, where KCB beat Strathmore in a tight contest. Both sides are eyeing crucial series points, and the rivalry adds an extra layer of spice to what promises to be an explosive finale in Nakuru.
Menengai Oilers will now take on Catholic Monks in the third-place playoff.
