South Africa declare squad for RAW7s title defense in Nairobi

Defending champions South Africa have named their final squad for this weekend’s Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens, set for 15–16 November at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds. Head coach Cecil Afrika, in his first tournament in charge, expressed confidence in his team’s readiness and mindset ahead of the continental showdown.

Afrika praised the squad’s energy during preparations in Stellenbosch and Pretoria, noting that the players have shown focus and determination throughout camp.

“They know exactly what’s at stake and are determined to deliver the result that keeps us on track,” said Afrika.

South Africa must win all their matches to stay in contention for HSBC SVNS Series qualification, but Afrika insists the team is embracing the challenge. “There’s massive pressure on us, but we’re all in to reach the next stage — Challenger 3 in January. This weekend is also the perfect chance to fine-tune our systems after a break in tournament play,” he added.

The squad blends experience with renewed hunger. Captain Nadine Roos leads a group that includes World Cup standouts Zintle Mpupha, Byrhandré Dolf, and Ayanda Malinga, alongside Leigh Fortuin, Shiniqwa Lamprecht, Simamkele Namba, Patience Mokone, and Maria Tshiremba — all returning from the SVNS Play-Offs in Los Angeles. There’s also a welcome return for Liske Lategan, back from a knee injury, while Asisipho Plaatjies makes her first appearance since the 2023 SVNS Cape Town tournament.
