Samoa Storm Past Brazil in FQT Opener

Samoa began their quest for a spot in the 2027 Rugby World Cup with a commanding 48–10 bonus-point victory over Brazil in the opening match of the Final Qualification Tournament at Dubai’s Sevens Stadium on Saturday 8 November 2025.

The Pacific Islanders struck early when Latrell Smiler Ah-Kiong sliced through the Brazilian line, setting up Jacob Umaga for the opening try, which he also converted. Umaga added a penalty soon after, giving Samoa an early edge.

Brazil faced an early setback at the 11-minute mark when Tamua Manu was sent to the sin-bin for a tip tackle, though a bunker review confirmed no further action was required. Seizing the advantage, Samoa’s wing Theo Bastardie darted through the defence to score, signaling the Tupis’ growing dominance.

Samoa’s physicality proved unstoppable, with Moana Pasifika hooker Mills Sanerivi finishing off a powerful maul for their next score. Manu, returning from the bin, extended the lead with a strong run into the in-goal area. Va’afauese Maliko added another before halftime, converted by Umaga, putting Samoa firmly in control at 29–5.

The second half saw the Tupis raise the tempo further. Melani Nanai and number eight Iakopo Mapu both crossed the line, with Manu claiming his second try in the 57th minute. Umaga’s conversions pushed the score to 48–5.

Brazil showed late resilience, with hooker Henrique Ferreira scoring a consolation try following Nanai’s temporary sin-binning. Referee Jorday Way brought the match to a close with Samoa collecting a full five-match points, setting the tone for their World Cup qualification campaign.
