Kakamega based varsity outfit MMUST Rugby Club will host Kisumu RFC in a pre-season friendly this Saturday at Mmust grounds from 11am as both sides fine-tune their preparations ahead of the 2025/26 Kenya Cup season.
The students, who earned their return to top-flight rugby after finishing top of the 2024/25 KRU Championship, will use the friendly to assess their squad depth before their season opener away to Kabras Sugar at the Kakamega Showgrounds. Kisumu, on the other hand, will kick off their campaign in Nairobi with a clash against Nondescripts on November 15.
John Asila’s side topped the Championship table with 10 wins from possible 11 matches, amassing 48 points. They secured promotion after a 46-9 semifinal win over Zetech Oaks before falling 39-12 to Daystar Falcons in the Championship final played at the Kakamega ASK Showground.
Speaking to Two5four ahead of the new season, MMUST captain Collins Ngoko expressed excitement about their return to the Kenya Cup and the team’s preparations.
“We are so happy to be back in Kenya Cup; we have been there before, it’s a good comeback. We appreciate the management and the players for the effort that ensured we get back to Kenya Cup.” he voiced.
“We are prepared and ready since the 7s season, the boys are fired up and keep improving daily, and we have our first friendly on Saturday to gauge ourselves.” he concluded.
The weekend encounter offers both teams a crucial chance to test combinations and build momentum before the high-stakes Kenya Cup season gets underway in a fortnight.
