Prior Named Player of the Tournament as Zimbabwe Clinch Rugby Africa Cup 2025

Zimbabwe’s seasoned flyhalf Ian Prior has been crowned Player of the Tournament following his stellar performances at the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup.

The 34-year-old playmaker was instrumental in Zimbabwe’s title-winning campaign, capping it off with a standout display in the final, where he scored 15 points to steer the Sables past Namibia and book a ticket to the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Prior’s composure, game management, and pinpoint kicking were crucial as Zimbabwe overcame Morocco, Kenya, and Namibia in a competitive knockout format. His leadership proved vital in navigating tight moments throughout the tournament.

Joining him in the accolades was lock Godfrey Muzanargwo, who walked away with the Man of the Match award in the final. Muzanargwo’s dominance in the lineouts and breakdowns anchored the Sables’ forward pack and was key to their success.

This triumph marks Zimbabwe’s third appearance at a men’s Rugby World Cup. The Sables were Africa’s sole representatives in the inaugural 1987 edition and later returned to the global stage in 1991.

Morocco, returning to top-flight continental rugby, also drew praise for their efforts. Despite a heavy opening defeat to Zimbabwe (43-9), the North African side rebounded with a 24-12 victory over Uganda and narrowly missed out on fifth place after a 33-28 loss to Senegal. Their head coach, Kouder Gasmi, was deservedly recognized as Coach of the Tournament.

While Zimbabwe shift focus to preparing for Australia 2027, Namibia, who finished as runners-up, remain in Kampala for a do-or-die playoff clash against the UAE, second-placed finishers from the Asia Rugby Emirates Men’s Championship.

The 2025 Rugby Africa Cup featured eight of the continent’s top national sides: Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya, Uganda, Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, and Côte d’Ivoire. Beyond World Cup qualification, the champions also secured a place in the second tier of the revamped Nations Cup competition.

For the first time in Rugby World Cup history, all qualifying nations will be confirmed by the end of 2025, with seedings for the 2027 tournament draw based on the official World Rugby Rankings.
