Former Daystar Falcons center Samwel Ovwamu, came back to torment his old club with a hat-trick as Menengai Oilers edged the university side 15-12 in a tense opening round clash at the 2025 Christie 7s taking place at the RFUEA grounds, Nairobi.

The Kenya simba’s international, who made the switch to Oilers earlier this last year was the difference-maker in a bruising contest, punishing Daystar with his trademark pace and power. Despite a spirited performance from the Falcons, his clinical finishing proved decisive, ensuring Oilers got their campaign off to a winning start.

Elsewhere, the day’s biggest upset came from Zetech University, who stunned recently crowned Prinsloo 7s champions Strathmore Leos 19-17 in a nail-biting encounter. Zetech showed grit and composure, holding their nerve in the dying moments to secure a famous victory.

Hosts Kenya Harlequins began their run in style, cruising past MSC Rugby 34-15, while Nakuru RFC powered to a 22-7 win over MMUST. Catholic Monks also impressed, brushing aside Impala RFC with a 33-5 win.

In the other Pool matches, defending champions Kabras RFC proved too strong for newcomers Uganda based Ruga Ruga, running out 34-5 winners. Mwamba RFC and Blak Blad played to a 17-17 stalemate, setting up an interesting battle for pool progression. KCB RFC, meanwhile, laid down a marker with a 35-12 victory over Nondies, showing early signs of their title ambitions.

With the opening round serving up drama, upsets, and individual brilliance, the stage is already set for an unpredictable and entertaining Christie 7s weekend at RFUEA Grounds.
