Mwamba Rugby Club has ushered in a new era after members voted in a fresh leadership team that will officially be unveiled on Saturday, with Edwin Waita taking over as the new club chairman.
His appointment comes at a crucial time for Kulabu, who were relegated from the Kenya Cup last season alongside South Coast Pirates after finishing second-last.
Speaking to Two5four, Waita expressed confidence and renewed optimism as he steps into the role, emphasizing that Mwamba’s immediate mission is clear.
“We are a few days to the kick-off of the season and preparations are on high gear. Our key focus this season is to immediately bounce back from the Championship to the Kenya Cup,” said Waita.
The new chairman noted that the journey back to the top begins with restoring Mwamba’s identity both on and off the pitch.
“We first have to bring back that lost Mwamba rugby culture, the energy back to the club. We embarked on massive recruitment targeting specific positions, and we’ve also incorporated a few tacticians whom we believe will take us to the next level,” he explained.
Mwamba have already had early assessments after featuring in the Impala Floodlit tournament, which Waita believes provided crucial lessons.
“We started our preparation early. During Floodlit we had a few areas of concern, which we have worked on. We are in the right trajectory,” he added.
With expectations high and the Championship season looming, Waita says his leadership philosophy goes beyond just results on the table.Asked on how he measure success on his leadership, Waita said:
“My success is seeing young men and women in this club growing in character and how they play. Mwamba is known as a family club,” he said, reaffirming the club’s long-standing values.
As Kulabu prepares to chase immediate promotion back to the Kenya Cup, the new leadership steered by Waita promises to inject new life, structure, and ambition into one of Kenya’s most storied rugby sides.
