Mwamba Hit Championship Summit After Solid Start Campaign

1983 Kenya Cup champions Mwamba RFC announced their intent early in the 2025/26 KRU Championship season, storming to the top of the table after a resounding 37–06 victory over debutants NYS Spades at the Goan Institute last Saturday. Kulabu not only secured a bonus-point win but also posted the league’s best points difference.

The opening weekend produced plenty of movement beneath Mwamba, with Catholic Monks settlin in second place after picking up a bonus-point walkover against Western Bulls, the Kakamega side failing to honour the fixture due to financial constraints.

Zetech Oaks occupy third also on five points after edging USIU Martials 41–38 in a high-scoring thriller. JKUAT Cougars and Homeboyz round off the top five with four points apiece, each earning solid home wins to begin their seasons on a high.

USIU Martials sit sixth with two points courtesy of their narrow losing bonus, while Mean Machine and Mombasa RFC follow in mid-table after both suffered defeats, Machine falling 28–31 to Homeboyz and Mombasa losing 10–24 away to JKUAT.

Newcomers NYS Spades start life in ninth place with no points after their heavy baptism of fire against Mwamba.

At the lower end, Western Bulls drop into negative points due to their walkover, while South Coast Pirates and Kisii RFC sit at the foot of the standings after their fixture was postponed to February following a mutual agreement prompted by Kisii’s request.
