The Mombasa-based KRU national wide side Shanzu Marlins Rugby Club is hosting the Mombasa Beach Rugby Charity Cup this weekend at Nyali Beach, running from Saturday, November 1 to Sunday, November 2.
The two-day event aims to raise funds for the club’s participation in the upcoming Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Nationwide League season while also reviving the once-vibrant culture of beach rugby along Kenya’s Coast, which had been dormant for several years.
This year’s tournament has attracted 12 teams, with five traveling from Nairobi and seven representing Mombasa.
Among the visiting sides are Karen Chiefs, Karen Crusaders, Safaricom Kings, Safaricom Queens, and Guns for Hire, while the local contingent features Shanzu Marlins, Shark Attack, Bamburi Cranes, Mekatilili wa Menza Shanzu Queens, Likoni Community Rugby, and Sultan.
Day One of the tournament saw thrilling matchups and plenty of entertainment on the sand, with both men’s and women’s teams battling for top honors.
