Miathene Boys and St Clare Girls emerged champions in the boys’ 15s and girls’ 7s categories respectively as Day Two of the Mitchez opens rugby games delivered tightly contested matches and thrilling knock-out action.
In the girls’ 7s pool fixtures, Kanjalu and Muthara settled for a barren draw (0-0) in a cagey opener. St Clare stamped early authority, beating Nkuene 17-5 before running riot over Mikinduri with a 32-0 win. Nkuene later recovered to edge Mikinduri 15-5, while Kanjalu sealed a semi-final slot after defeating Kirindine 10-5.
The boys’ 15s preliminary matches were equally competitive. Miathene edged ABC 5-0 as Kibirichia blanked Muthara 8-0. Kirindine saw off Njia 3-0, Burieruri beat St Paul 19-3, while Kanyakine squeezed past Nkubu 3-0.
In the quarterfinals, hosts Miathene maintained their defensive solidity to eliminate Nkubu 5-0. Kibirichia advanced after beating Kanyakine 10-5. Ontulili and St Francis of Assisi played to a 5-5 draw, with St Francis progressing via coin toss, while Burieruri dismissed Isiolo 12-7.
The semi-finals saw Miathene step up, overpowering St Francis 15-0 to book a place in the final. Kibirichia joined them after grinding out a narrow 3-0 victory over Burieruri.
In the girls’ last four, Kanjalu edged Nkuene 8-5 as St Clare proved too strong for Muthara with a 24-10 win.
The finals lived up to expectation. St Clare clinched the girls’ title with a hard-fought 5-0 victory over Kanjalu, In the boys’ final, Miathene held their nerve to beat Kibirichia 5-3 in a tense duel, crowning an impressive unbeaten run to the championship.
