Defending Kabras Sugar RFC stretched their winning run over Blak Blad RFC to 15 consecutive matches after grinding out a hard-fought 26–16 victory in a tightly contested Kenya Cup clash at Kenyatta University Grounds.
The students struck first in dramatic fashion. Steve Odhiambo reacted quickest to intercept a pass from youngster Roy Maruti deep inside his own half before racing clear to score under the posts. Reliable boot Enock Oduor calmly added the conversion and later slotted a penalty to hand Blak Blad a 10–0 lead. Kabras responded through Jeason Misoga, who broke from the base and powered over to cut the deficit. Eric Cantona’s conversion attempt drifted wide, leaving the score at 10–5.
Momentum began to swing as scrum-half Roy Maruti burrowed over under the posts to level matters. Cantona made no mistake with the conversion, giving Kabras a slender 12–10 advantage heading into the halftime break.
The second half resumed with intensity, though Kabras were briefly reduced to 14 men when Walter Okoth was sent to the sin bin for a tackle infringement. Despite the setback, Maruti struck again, finishing clinically for his second try. Cantona converted to extend the lead to 19–10.
Blak Blad refused to fade, with Oduor’s accurate boot keeping them within touching distance as he slotted another penalty to narrow the gap to 19–13.However, Kabras’ scrum once again proved decisive. A powerful drive created space on the blind side, allowing Maruti to complete his hat-trick in style. Cantona’s conversion pushed the score to 26–13 and gave the sugarmen breathing room.
A late Oduor penalty reduced the deficit to 26–16, but Kabras controlled possession and territory in the closing stages to see out the match comfortably. The victory not only preserved Kabras Sugar’s dominance over the students but also reinforced their credentials as serious contenders as the Kenya Cup season gathers momentum.
