Kenya sealed their place in the quarterfinals with a confident 37–0 win over Ghana, closing Day 1 on a high and exciting the home crowd.
The Lionesses struck early through Grace Okullo, who broke through the defence and converted her own try for a 7–0 start. A Ghana penalty soon opened space for Freshia Oduor, who sprinted through for Kenya’s second. Captain Sheila Chajira added another after strong work from Naomi Amuguni as Kenya continued to push forward.
Just before halftime, Janet Okello crossed the line to give Kenya a comfortable 22–0 lead. She returned in the second half to score her second of the match, extending her impressive try tally for the tournament.
Maureen Muritu then grabbed her first try of the competition, and debutant Nelly Chikombe powered over for the final score, sealing a 37–0 win and booking Kenya’s quarterfinal meeting with Zimbabwe.
Elsewhere, South Africa confirmed their strength with a big 45–0 victory over Zimbabwe, scoring several well-worked tries and keeping their perfect defensive record intact.
Uganda claimed a tight 20–14 win over Zambia after both teams exchanged strong runs and physical battles. Uganda held on late to secure the result.
In Pool D, Madagascar edged Tunisia 21–14 in a closely fought game to take the early lead in the group.
