Late Heroics Rescue Mwamba After USIU Fightback

 

Former Kenya cup side Mwamba RFC held their nerve to claim a hard-fought 22–17 victory over USIU in an entertaining contest that swung momentum several times before a late decisive try sealed the result at the USIU grounds, Nairobi.

The visitors, under the tutelage of former Kenya 7s coach Paul Murunga struck first through Douglas Opani, who crossed the whitewash to hand Mwamba a 5–0 lead, though the conversion sailed wide.

USIU responded with a penalty trimming the gap 3-05, a try by winger Shaquel Bosire stretched Kulabu’s lead to 10–3 with another missed conversion.

Mwamba finished the first half strongly when captain Bruce Shihemi dotted down, with fullback Dennis Ndayala adding the extras to extend the lead to 17–3 at the break.

USIU came out revitalised after halftime, pulling back to back attacks before sustained pressure paid off through the boot with three consecutive penalties to make it 17-17.

With the game in the balance, Mwamba found the breakthrough late on as substitute George Omollo powered over for the match-winning try, pushing the score to 22–17 and sealing a gritty win.

The victory marked Mwamba’s fourth win of the season in the KRU championship league.
