Lamec Ambetsa on why he joined Nondies

Kenya 7s international and former Kabras Sugar winger Lamec Ambetsa is embracing a new chapter in his rugby career after joining Nondescripts RFC. The explosive winger, who is set to make his debut for Nondies today at the Impala Floodlit Tournament against Strathmore Leos, says the move was motivated by the need for personal growth, fresh challenges, and self-reinvention.

Ambetsa, an alumnus of Bungoma High School and engineering graduate from Masinde Muliro University, spent three trophy-laden seasons with Kabras RFC after joining the Kakamega-based side in December 2022 from MMUST RFC.

During his stay, he won three consecutive Kenya Cup titles (2022/23, 2023/24, and 2024/25) and two Enterprise Cups (2022/23 and 2023/24).

Despite that success, Ambetsa says he felt the time was right to seek a new environment that would help him rediscover his sharpness and push him beyond his comfort zone.

However, his steady rise was interrupted when he suffered a tibia hairline fracture while representing Kenya at the 2024 Olympic Games, an injury that sidelined him for several months and gave him time to reflect on his career and future.

Speaking exclusively to Two5four, he explained:“After my injury, I took some time off to reset and reflect. You know, sometimes staying in one place for too long can make you a bit complacent, so I felt it was time to try out a new environment, to stay sharp, refreshed, and on my toes again.”

Ambetsa added that the decision also aligned with his professional aspirations outside the pitch.

“I also wanted to explore more in my engineering field, start fresh and rebuild my brand. Generally, it’s about embracing a new environment, creating bonds with my new family, and keeping the same ultimate goal, to win.”

For Ambetsa, the move to Nondies represents more than a change of jersey; it’s a chance to rediscover his rhythm and balance his dual ambitions in rugby and engineering.

“My main aspiration is to keep growing, both personally and professionally,” he said. “I want to keep improving in my field of engineering while continuing to push my limits in rugby, to get back to who I was before getting injured.”

Looking ahead, Ambetsa hopes to make an immediate impact for the Red Lions.

“My goal is to stay disciplined, adapt to new environments, and make a meaningful impact wherever I go, to build a strong foundation for long-term success, to keep learning and winning both on and off the field.”
