The Kenya Rugby Union has announced a provisional Shujaa squad as preparations step up for the 2025 Safari 7s and the 2026 HSBC World Sevens Series, where the national team will be seeking promotion back into the top division of the global competition.
Head Coach Kevin Wambua and Chairman of Selectors Elijah Toili unveiled a group that brings together a mix of seasoned internationals and rising stars who impressed on the National Sevens Circuit.
The players will report to camp on Monday, September 22, 2025, at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.
Kenya Rugby Union Director of Rugby and Pathway Manager, Paul Odera, welcomed the announcement, calling it a significant step in building for both present and future success. “This is an exciting time for the men’s team as Shujaa prepare for the 2025–2026 International Sevens season. The provisional squad is an excellent blend of youth and experience. I am pleased to see that the selectors and head coach have recognised the performance of players from a broad spectrum of clubs who participated in the National Sevens Circuit,” he told Kenya Rugby Union Media.
Odera added that a call-up is just the first step, noting that the real challenge for the players will be impressing the coaching staff during training in order to make the final squad. He expressed confidence that the process would produce a team capable of winning Kenya a place in the top division of the HSBC Sevens Series. Importantly, he also highlighted the inclusion of a pathway for younger players, with Kenya set to select an Under-20 sevens side for the first time, creating a clearer route for emerging talent into the Shujaa and Morans teams.
The squad will be trimmed down after the first phase of training at RFUEA, with final selections based on form, fitness, and adaptability to the demands of international rugby.
