Kisii RFC have confirmed that they will not travel to the Coast for their scheduled KRU Championship round six encounter against Mombasa RFC after citing financial constraints.
In a statement released by the club, the former Kenya cup side explained that logistical and financial challenges made it impossible for the team to undertake the journey to Mombasa for the fixture, leaving them with no option but to offer a walkover.
“Our journey to Mombasa to play against Mombasa RFC was not possible due to financial constraints. We will have to offer a walkover to Mombasa on this one,” read part of the statement.
The development hands Mombasa RFC a win, the second of the season, with the Coast-based side expected to be awarded maximum points in line with Kenya Rugby Union competition regulations.
The forfeiture is a setback for Kisii RFC, who have been working to stabilize their campaign in the second tier despite ongoing challenges off the pitch. Financial strain has remained a major hurdle for several upcountry clubs, particularly when it comes to long-distance travel for league fixtures.
Mombasa RFC, who were set to host the fixture, will now turn their attention to upcoming matches as the Championship season continues.
