Kenya Shujaa overpower Canada in dominant HSBC SVNS 2 opener

The Kenya Shujaa launched their HSBC SVNS Series 2 campaign in style with a 28–12 victory over Canada, reigniting a rivalry that dates back to the Canadians’ role in Kenya’s past relegation.

Kenya struck early through Patrick Odongo, who powered over for the opening try before a clean conversion pushed Shujaa ahead 7–0. Momentum continued to build as Chrisant Ojwang’ sliced through the defence for Kenya’s second, stretching the lead to 12–0. Odongo then returned for his brace, giving Shujaa a comfortable 17–0 advantage.

Canada responded just before halftime, capitalizing on a three-on-two break to register their first try and narrow the score to 17–7 at the break.

The Canadians came into the second half determined, adding another try to close the gap to 17–12 after a missed conversion. But Shujaa quickly regained control. Nygel Amaitsa produced a moment of brilliance, delivering a sharp dummy pass that set up a centre-post try, restoring Kenya’s breathing space at 24–12 after the conversion.

Late in the match, Festus Shiasi, fresh off the bench and eager to make an impression danced through the Canadian defence to seal the victory at 28–12.

A confident and clinical display, the win marks a strong start for Kenya Shujaa as they chase a statement run in the HSBC SVNS Series 2.
