KCB Rugby advanced to the Cup semifinals of the 2025 Prinsloo 7s after overcoming a resilient Kabras side 17-5 in a heated quarterfinal clash on Sunday at the Nakuru Athletic Club.
The bankers were quick off the mark, drawing first blood through Floyd Wabwire who powered his way past the Kabras defence to score the opener. Festus Shiasi stepped up to add the extras, giving KCB an early 7-0 cushion.
Kabras, however, were not rattled. They hit back moments later when Brian Mutua broke through the KCB line, touching down under the sticks. But Jackson Siketi failed to convert, leaving the sugar men trailing by just two points at the break, 7-5.
The second half saw both sides tighten up defensively, but it was KCB who broke the deadlock again. After sustained pressure, the ball found its way back to Wabwire, who made no mistake from close range to complete his brace and stretch the lead to 12-5.
With time ticking away and Kabras pushing hard for a response, captain Vincent Onyala settled the nerves for the bankers. The Kenya Sevens star finished off a sweeping move with a decisive try that sealed the win at 17-5 and secured a semifinal slot.
KCB will now face an in-form Menengai Oilers side, who narrowly edged out hosts Nakuru RFC 7-0 in the day’s first quarterfinal. The Oilers struck early through Fortune Aturo’s quick try in the opening minute, which was converted by Dennis Abukuse.
Despite Nakuru losing Cyprian Ombaso to the sin bin, the Oilers were unable to add to their tally. However, their early strike proved enough as they held on to book a spot in the last four.
Defending champions Strathmore Leos also kept their title hopes alive with a dominant 26-0 win over Kenya Harlequin. Stansilaus Shikoli opened the scoring in the first half before second-half tries from Samuel Wafula, Victor Mola, and Nygel Amaitsa sealed the deal.
Strathmore will now face Catholic Monks in the second semifinal after the Monks edged Mwamba 12-7 in a tightly contested affair.
With the semifinal lineup now complete, attention turns to a thrilling conclusion to the Prinsloo 7s, with four heavyweights eyeing the coveted Cup title.
