KCB Complete Aswani Swoop from Strathmore Leos

Kenya Cup heavyweights KCB RFC have completed the signing of John Cleophas Aswani from Strathmore Leos, marking another major addition to their growing list of new acquisitions.

Strathmore confirmed the move through a statement on their social media pages, bidding farewell to the towering lock who has been a key figure both on and off the field.

“From a rookie straight out of high school to a leader on and off the pitch; it’s been one solid journey. You’ve grown, led, and left your mark in the Leos kit,” the club said in part.

“Respect for everything you’ve done for the badge. All the best in your next chapter. Once a Leo, always a Leo.”

Aswani joined the Leos straight from high school and rose through the ranks to become one of their most consistent forwards. His time at the club was decorated with milestones, including being named Rookie of the Year (2019/2020), Kenya Cup Championship Finalist (2019/2020), and Sports Representative (2022/2023). He also featured for Chipu (Kenya U20) in 2021 and 2022 and was part of the Kenya Cup second runners-up squad in 2021.

Speaking to Two5four on his move, Aswani said the decision to leave Strathmore was a difficult but necessary step in his career.

“The decision to move from Leos to KCB was not one I took lightly. It was a blend of professional ambition and the right timing in my career,” he said.

“Leos gave me everything, a nurturing environment where I built unbreakable bonds with teammates who became family, and experienced the raw passion of rugby that ignited my love for the game. What drew me to KCB was the opportunity to challenge myself at an elite level, contributing to a club with such a storied legacy of excellence and success in Kenyan rugby.”

The former BSc. Financial Services student, Class of 2024, added that he is ready to embrace the new challenge with focus and discipline.

“My years at Leos were instrumental in developing me as a rugby player. From physical battles to leading lineouts under pressure this is what I’m bringing to KCB,” he noted.

“I’m focused on executing my role while following the coach’s game plan to help KCB win the Kenya Cup title. My goal is to deliver consistent, physical performances.”

Aswani now joins a star-studded KCB squad as the bankers look to reclaim the Kenya Cup crown in the upcoming 2025/26 season.
