Kabras Sugar marched into the Dala 7s final after a hard-fought 14-0 win over Menengai Oilers in the semifinals at the Mamboleo Showground in Kisumu on Sunday, September 14.
The defending champions endured a tense first half where both sides struggled to unlock each other’s defense. The scoreboard stayed untouched at the break, setting up a nervy finish.
On resumption, Kabras found their spark. William Mwanji broke the deadlock with a well-worked try, converted by Brian Ambale. Moments later, Patrick Lumumba forced his way over for a second, Ambale once again adding the extras to close out the contest.
The win booked the Sugarmen a place in their first-ever National Sevens Circuit final, where they are set to face KCB Rugby. The Bankers punched their ticket with a 19-5 win over Daystar Falcons.
Falcons had stunned KCB early through Clinton Amukwachi’s try, but Stephen Osumba replied before halftime to give the bankers the lead. After the break, ex-Falcons star Floyd Wabwire crossed the whitewash before setting up George Ooro for their third, sealing a deserved win.
Elsewhere, Nakuru RFC defeated Strathmore Leos 12-7 in the fifth-place playoff, with Joel Mboya and Fidel Wekesa scoring the decisive tries. Mwamba RFC edged Nondescripts 21-19 in a thriller, with a missed conversion proving costly for Nondies.
Catholic Monks thumped Embu RFC 41-0 to reach the Challenge Trophy final, where they will face Impala, narrow 12-10 winners over Quins. In 13th-place action, MMUST saw off Homeboyz 28-10, while hosts Kisumu delighted the home fans by edging Mombasa 19-14.
