Kabras RFC run in eleven tries to dominate MMUST in Kenya Cup opener

By Mahlon Lichuma

Kabras RFC began their 12th Kenya Cup campaign in dominant fashion, overpowering MMUST 67–6 in the Lurambi Derby at the Kakamega Showground.

The visitors arrived carrying the reminder that MMUST were the only side to beat them since February 2022, but Kabras quickly erased any question of vulnerability.

They settled immediately, crossing through Asuman Mugerwa and Jeanson Misoga, with Jone Kubu converting Misoga’s effort for a 12–0 lead. MMUST briefly halted the momentum through former Kabras fly-half Flavian Otiyo, who struck a long-range penalty to make it 12–3.

Kabras responded instantly with Scrum-half Roy Maruti sniped cleverly from the base of a ruck to restore command before Kubu added the extras for 19–3. Last season’s top try scorer, Griffin Chao, opened his 2025 account soon after, slicing in from the right wing for a converted try that stretched the advantage to 26–3. MMUST closed the half with a penalty, taking the score to 26–6.

The second half belonged entirely to Kabras. Mugerwa claimed his second try shortly after MMUST lost Churchill Oyugi to injury, before Kubu sold a smart dummy to score under the posts, extending the lead to 36–6.

Kabras’ pressure remained relentless. A dominant maul produced another try for 41–6, followed by a brilliant solo run from Barry Robinson that pushed the score to 48–6. Substitute Teddy Akala powered over from close range, and Chao completed his brace off a setup from Mathias Osimbo as Kabras closed out an emphatic eleven-try statement to open their season.
