Kabras Edge Oilers to Seal Top Spot in Kenya Cup Regular Season

Kenya cup defending champions Kabras Sugar RFC wrapped up the 2025/26 Kenya Cup regular season in dominant fashion after beating Menengai Oilers RFC 27–13 at the ASK Showground in Kakamega on Saturday, March 14.

The victory confirmed Kabras as the top side heading into the playoffs, finishing the regular season with 52 points from 11 matches. Their closest challengers, KCB Rugby, ended second on 50 points. Both teams earned the advantage of hosting home semi-finals, while Oilers secured third place with 45 points and will now head into the playoff round.

Kabras wasted little time asserting themselves in front of their home crowd. Captain George Nyambua opened the scoring with the first try of the match before Erick Cantona converted to give the hosts a 7–0 lead.

Oilers responded through the boot of Abdultwalib Wesonga, who slotted a penalty to reduce the deficit. However, Kabras continued to dominate territory and possession. Their pressure soon paid off when Mathias Osimbo powered over for the second try, with Cantona again adding the extras.

Despite the pressure, Oilers remained competitive. Fortune Arturo crossed the line for a well-worked centre-post try that kept the visitors within touching distance. Heavy rain began falling late in the half, but Kabras still carried a 19–10 advantage into the break.

The Sugarmen resumed the second half with renewed intensity. Nyambua completed his brace from a powerful rolling maul move, stretching the lead further although the conversion attempt drifted wide.

Wesonga kept Oilers in the contest with another penalty, but Kabras had the final word. Barry Robinson calmly struck a late drop goal to seal the 27–13 win moments before full time.

The result extended Kabras’ remarkable unbeaten run to 52 matches, including 51 victories, and also marked the 50th unbeaten game for head coach Carlos Katywa since taking charge of the club.

With the regular season now complete, attention shifts to the playoffs where the race for the 2025/26 Kenya Cup title intensifies.
