Interim Committee to Run Zimbabwe Rugby After Board Suspension

Fresh from qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup 34-years after their last appearance in 1991, Zimbabwe rugby now faces a change in leadership following the suspension of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) board earlier this month.

The suspension, passed on 9 September, bars the officials from all rugby administration until the next elections.

In response, an Interim Management Committee (IMC) has been put in place to oversee the game’s administration.

Businessman and investor Paddy Zhanda will chair the five-member team, which also includes Latifa Kassim, a Nedbank executive and sports sponsor; Gareth Crabbe, a rugby stakeholder; Wellington Magaya, a legal professional; and Godwin “Jaws” Murambiwa, a coach and administrator.

The IMC’s mandate includes restoring financial accountability, keeping domestic competitions running, safeguarding athlete welfare, reviewing the ZRU constitution, and working closely with World Rugby and Rugby Africa. A key part of its work will also involve preparing the national team for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
