Former Kenya Harlequin and Simbas hooker Vincent “Buff” Ongera was recently recognized by the Government of Kenya during the Mashujaa Day celebrations as a National Hero for his outstanding contribution to rugby and sport in general.
The honor, conferred by President William Ruto was presented under the Kenya Heroes Act. It celebrates Buff’s remarkable service to the nation,both on and off the field,as a player, mentor, and ambassador of Kenyan rugby.

A true stalwart of the game, Buff enjoyed a 13-season career with Kenya Harlequin, where he played a pivotal role in one of the club’s most successful eras. During his time at Quins, he helped the team clinch five Kenya Cup titles (2003, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012), three Enterprise Cup titles (2003, 2009, and 2011), and six Rugby Super Series crowns (2003, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012). His dynamic play and consistency even saw him finish as a Kenya Cup top try scorer, a rare feat for a front-row player.

On the international stage, Buff proudly represented the national fifteens team, The Simbas from 2003 to 2013, serving in a formidable front row that included club mates Joel Ng’ang’a and Daniel Kiptoo as well as Frank Amiani, Derrick Wamalwa, Arthur Shikwe, Nzioka Muema, Arthur Shikwe, Curtis Lilako, Moses Amusala, Dennis Karani, Samuel Warui among others during a defining decade for the team.
He also turned out for the Elgon Warriors in 2012 and was instrumental in Kenya’s triumphs in several regional tournaments, including the Elgon Cup (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011), the Victoria Cup (2010), and the Africa Cup (2011).
