Double Delight for Kenya as Shujaa and Lionesses Rule Safari 7s

The 2025 Safari Sevens came to an emotional close on Sunday at the Nyayo National Stadium, marked by both triumph and tribute. Before kickoff, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Warren Abrahams, the Belgium Sevens head coach who sadly passed away on Friday, October 10, during the tournament.

When the whistle finally blew, Kenya Shujaa and the Kenya Lionesses ensured the day ended on a high note for the hosts, each clinching their respective titles in front of a passionate home crowd.

In the men’s final, Shujaa had to dig deep to overcome a resilient Shogun 7s side. The visitors drew first blood early in the game with a converted try, briefly silencing the crowd. But Shujaa responded with determination, constantly testing Shogun’s defense. Nygel Amaitsa thought he had found a breakthrough with a clever kick-and-chase, only for the referee to rule the ball held up.

Moments later, Shogun were reduced to six men after an infringement, and Kenya seized the opportunity. Amaitsa made no mistake this time, touching down to level the scores at 7–7 heading into halftime.

The second half brought more drama. Shogun came close again but were denied by Kenya’s committed defense. Substitutions soon changed the tide, Chrisant Ojwang and Floyd Wabwire entered the fray, injecting pace and power. Wabwire’s impact was immediate, bursting through for a crucial try that was successfully converted to give Shujaa a 14–7 lead.

When the final whistle sounded, scenes of pure jubilation followed. The Lionesses, fresh from defeating Uganda in the women’s final, joined their brothers on the pitch for a joint celebration, marking a memorable clean sweep for Kenya at this year’s Safari 7s.
