Menengai Oilers forwards coach Lawi Buyachi has opened up on the deep emotions, mental battles and fine margins that will define this weekend’s highly anticipated Kenya cup week five clash dubbed ‘Nakuru Derby’, as Oilers prepare to host Nakuru RFC at the Refinery.
Speaking to Two5four,the former South Coast Pirates head coach reflected on the personal significance of facing a club that played a pivotal role in shaping his rugby journey.
“Nakuru RFC honed my skills, shaped me and made me what I eventually turned out to be, and I remain forever indebted,” Buyachi said.
“Standing at the touchline itself can be very emotional. I’m sure it’s even more demanding for the players inside the rectangle. But for me, it’s about ambition and growth, and where I want to be as a coach.”he voiced.
The Nakuru Derby has grown into one of the fiercest rivalries in the Kenya Cup calendar, with recent meetings showing how closely matched the two sides are. The two sides have met six times since oilers got promoted to Kenya Cup in 2018/19 season, each team winning three times.
Buyachi admits that while form matters, derbies often take on a life of their own.
“I agree in totality that derbies are decided by emotion, but the team that settles early will have the upper hand and control,” he explained. “We are fortunate to be playing on our own turf. The majority of our players have been in a couple of derbies and are mature enough to handle the pressure and the threats the Wanyore will pose.”
With honours shared in recent encounters, Buyachi believes discipline, structure and mentality will be decisive if Oilers are to tilt the balance in their favour.
“Oilers have what it takes to come out on top if they play within the structure, stay in the fight at all times, bring their A-game and the mongrel in them,” he said.
“Mental tenacity will be key as we approach the lads from the nest.”
