Debutant Ovwamu Eager to Impress as Simbas Face Algeria in Rugby Africa Cup Playoff

Menengai Oilers center Samwel Ovwamu is buzzing with excitement and pride as he prepares to make his debut for the Kenya Simbas in their Rugby Africa Cup playoff clash against Algeria, set for today at Uganda’s Namboole Stadium.

Ovwamu, known for his powerful runs and consistent performances with the Oilers, has earned his first national team call-up and is expected to feature in the high-stakes fixture kicking off at 12 noon. The match marks the conclusion of Kenya’s campaign at the continental tournament.
“It’s an honor to be selected in the Simbas squad that will play against Algeria,” Ovwamu told Two5Four. “Wearing the national jersey means everything to me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent my country.”
The Vihiga High School alumnus added: “I’ve worked hard for this moment and am ready to give it my all for the team and fans. I’m focused, hungry, and determined to make Kenya proud.”
Ovwamu heads into the tie in fine form, having scored nine tries for the Oilers in just 13 Kenya Cup appearances this season. His work ethic and on-field presence have made him a standout performer, and the Simbas will be hoping he can translate that form onto the international stage.
Kenya, who narrowly lost to Zimbabwe in their last outing, are keen to finish the tournament on a positive note. With young talents like Ovwamu stepping up, the Simbas are looking to lay a solid foundation for the future of Kenyan rugby.
All eyes will be on the debutant as he looks to make his mark and help steer the Simbas to a strong finish.
