Kenya 7s, Shujaa, produced a composed and clinical display at the HSBC SVNS Division Two second leg, in São Paulo, registering consecutive victories over the United States and Uruguay to strengthen their campaign.
Shujaa began by ending their winless run against the USA with a convincing 31-14 triumph, overturning earlier defeats suffered in Nairobi and Montevideo.
The Americans drew first blood through Tucker Trickey, whose converted try handed them a 7-0 lead. Kenya responded swiftly, with co-captain George Ooro crashing over to level matters after a successful conversion. Momentum swung Kenya’s way before the break, as David Nyangige capped off a well-worked move initiated by Ooro to give Shujaa a 12-7 halftime advantage.
Nyangige returned in the second half to grab his brace, capitalizing on a loose ball and beating several defenders to extend the lead to 19-7. Although the USA were awarded a penalty try and saw Patrick Odongo sin-binned, Shujaa held firm.
Chrissant Ojwang restored Kenya’s control with a well-taken try, before John Okoth added the finishing touch to secure an emphatic 31-14 win. Shujaa carried the momentum into their next fixture against Uruguay, where they cruised to a 26-14 victory to complete a third consecutive win over the South Americans.
Ooro once again set the tone with the opening try, while Samuel Asati capitalized on a turnover to stretch the lead to 12-0. Uruguay rallied to take a brief 14-12 lead, but Kenya responded with intent.
Festus Shiasi finished off a flowing attacking move to reclaim the lead, before Ojwang sealed the result late on.
