Mwamba RFC kicked off their 2025 KRU Championship campaign in fashion, overpowering newly promoted NYS Spades 37–6 in a match staged at Goan Institute on Saturday.

Mwamba struck first through a penalty, calmly slotted in by Eugene Ojiambo for a 3–0 lead 10 minutes into the match, they were awarded another penalty, and once again Ojiambo made no mistake to stretch the advantage to 6–0. The hosts, however, were briefly reduced to 14 men after Christopher Asira was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle.

NYS nearly opened their account after a strong spell of pressure but were denied just a metre from the try box. Mwamba responded immediately, crossing the whitewash for the first try of the match through Ian Wamalwa and Eugene Ojiambo converted to take a 13–0 lead at halftime.

The second half saw a more ruthless Mwamba side return to the pitch. Their intention was clear, and another converted try from Yahya Hussein pushed the scoreline to 20–0. NYS finally got on the board with a well-taken penalty to make it 20–3, but the momentum firmly remained with Mwamba.

Paul Tatii crossed twice In second half as Mwamba continued to pile pressure. Eugene Ojiambo was clinical from the boot, drilling in one more penalty to seal a 37–06 win.

Speaking after the match, Mwamba stand-in coach Joseph Babu praised the team’s character.

“The boys showed real hunger today. Even when we went down to 14, they stayed disciplined, stuck to our structures, and earned this result. NYS is a physical side and I think our boys overlooked NYS but we managed to contain the situation.”

Mwamba will travel to Kisii county next weekend to face another promoted side Kisii RFC.
