Kenya’s rising rugby star Nelly Chikombe is eyeing more national team opportunities after a strong showing at the 2025 Safari 7s, where she featured for the Kenya Cubs on her maiden international Sevens appearance.
The fleet-footed Impala RFC winger crossed the whitewash four times in five matches, helping the Cubs finish fifth overall in the women’s category. Her performance added to what has been a breakout year, having earlier impressed on the National Sevens Circuit with eight tries for Impala.
Speaking exclusively to Two5Four Rugby, Chikombe described her first Safari 7s experience as “a dream come true.”
“It was such a special moment to wear the national colors and represent the Kenya Cubs. I’ve learned a lot this weekend, and it has really motivated me to work harder,” she said.
The 21-year-old, who has also featured for the Kenya Lionesses 15s side, expressed gratitude to her support system for cheering her on from the stands.
“I’m so grateful to my family and all the fans who came out to support us at Nyayo Stadium. Hearing them cheer really pushed me to give my best,” she added.
With her eyes now set on the senior Kenya Lionesses Sevens team, Chikombe says the Safari 7s experience has strengthened her resolve to keep improving.
“My goal now is to break into the senior Lionesses Sevens setup. I know it will take hard work, but I’m ready for the challenge.”
The 2025 Safari 7s concluded on a high note for the home sides, with both Kenya Shujaa and Kenya Lionesses clinching their respective titles in front of a vibrant Nyayo National Stadium crowd.
