Cash-strapped Western Bulls grind past Kisii RFC to secure first win of the season

Cash-strapped Western Bulls RFC finally got their 2025/26 KRU championship campaign up and running after edging out visitors Kisii RFC 29–28 at the bull ring in a spirited encounter, registering their first win of the season despite a turbulent start off the pitch.

The Kakamega-based side has endured a difficult opening to the campaign, with financial challenges forcing them to give a walkover in their season opener against JKUAT. They later travelled to Nairobi to face Mwamba RFC but came up short in that outing. However, on this occasion, Bulls put their woes aside and delivered when it mattered most.

Kisii RFC made a bright start and went into the break with a 14–12 halftime lead, capitalising on early pressure and defensive lapses from the Bulls. But the second half told a different story as Western Bulls tightened up defensively and took control through a dominant kicking display.

Fly-half Eugene Muyinzi proved the difference, keeping the scoreboard ticking with a superb haul of five penalties and calmly slotting over two conversions. His composure off the tee punished Kisii indiscipline and swung momentum firmly in the Bulls’ favour.

In open play, Emmanuel Efedha was the standout performer, crossing the whitewash twice to give Western Bulls crucial tries that lifted belief within the camp and silenced Kisii’s resistance.
The victory is a timely morale boost for Western Bulls, who continue to battle challenges away from the field, but showed grit, unity and resilience to get their season back on track.

Western Bulls will now hope this hard-fought win marks a turning point both on and off the pitch as they look to build momentum in the coming fixture against NYS spades away in Nairobi.
