KRU championship outfit Western Bulls RFC are appealing for financial support to enable them to honour the upcoming 2025/26 KRU Championship season, which is scheduled to kick off on November 16.
The Kakamega-based club, once a regular feature in Kenya’s top-flight league, is facing a major financial crisis and has not held any training sessions since the conclusion of the Dala 7s tournament in September.
Team manager Mike Ligono painted a grim picture of the club’s situation, saying that they have completely run out of funds and risk missing the season opener.
“We have not trained since Dala 7s because the club is completely broke. We relied on well-wishers to participate in Dala, Kabeberi, and Embu 7s, but since then, we haven’t been able to meet even once,” Ligono revealed.
“We are appealing to all our supporters, alumni, and rugby lovers to come to our aid so that we can honour the Championship fixtures and keep the Western Bulls name alive.”
Despite the challenges, Western Bulls, fondly known as “Echulusi” remain one of the most respected rugby brands in the country, having produced several players who have gone on to represent Kenya at the highest level.
Among their notable products are Derrick Ashiundu, now a Kabras Sugar RFC winger and Kenya 7s international, Kenya 7s starboy Nygel Amaitsa, KCB’s and Shujaa Elvis Olukusi and Elkeans Musonye, who currently turns out for Menengai Oilers RFC.
The club has opened a M-Pesa paybill number 522522, Account: 1131768175
for those willing to contribute and help them stay afloat this season.
“This team has given Kenya some of its best rugby talent. It would be painful to see it fade away because of financial struggles. Any contribution, no matter how small, will go a long way,” Ligono added.
With just weeks to the new season, the Bulls face a race against time to regroup and prepare hoping that the rugby community rallies behind them once again.
