Miathene Boys High School will this weekend stage the 9th edition of the Mitchez Open Tournament, a multi-discipline sporting event slated for February 7–8 at the school’s grounds, with rugby expected to headline the two-day program.
The tournament, running daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., is set to attract teams from across the wider region, with institutions ranging from universities and colleges to clubs and both senior and junior secondary schools confirming participation.
Rugby will once again be a major attraction, with the boys’ 15s and girls’ 7s categories providing a timely build-up platform ahead of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term One games. The matches are expected to give coaches an opportunity to assess squads, test combinations, and sharpen tactics before the school season intensifies.
Over the years, the Mitchez Open has grown into an important stop on the regional rugby development pathway, offering young players valuable match exposure in a competitive but structured environment, while also promoting sportsmanship across other disciplines.
Tournament Coordinator-cum Kenya rugby union development officer Patrick Mwika noted that the timing of the event is intentional, serving as preparation for schools ahead of the national schools’ calendar.
“These competitions are held annually before the Term One secondary school games to help teams get ready for the KSSSA calendar. We welcome fans, school teams, clubs, and tertiary institutions to join hands in nurturing talent within Meru County,” Mwika said.
Alongside rugby, participants will compete in football, handball, basketball, hockey, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, netball for girls, and lawn tennis.
Registration fees have been set at KSh 2,500 per outdoor discipline, while indoor games will cost KSh 300 per participant, a structure aimed at keeping the tournament accessible to many teams.
