After stunning defending champions KCB in last year’s Impala Floodlit quarterfinals, Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad head into the 2025 edition full of belief and quiet determination.

Their memorable 2024 run to the semifinals, where they fell to Menengai Oilers, remains a proud milestone in the university’s rugby history.

Head coach Benard Rotich “Tichi” calls that campaign a dream come true.

“Personally and on behalf of the group, that was our biggest moment last season,” he said. “We really thank God for that.”

Tichi believes the experience gave his young side invaluable confidence. “In terms of preparation and mindset, we’ve grown steadily,” he noted. “We hope to do even better this year.”

He adds that the team now embraces the pressure that comes with success.

“Pressure is a privilege. It means something is expected, and we’re pushing ourselves for a purpose greater than us.”

Reflecting on last year’s semifinal loss, he said: “Knockout rugby is all about moments—win those crucial moments, and you win the game.”

Blad’s buildup has been steady, with most players now fully fit. “We’ve emphasized fundamentals, simplicity, and clarity,” Tichi said.

Despite regular turnover due to academics, he views it as part of university rugby. “We’re a conveyor belt, players come as students first, then move on. Our job is to mentor them while they’re here.”

Tichi also praised upcoming talent and loyal fans. “Our supporters are the reason we play. Blad is thicker than blood.”

As the 2025 Floodlit kicks off, Blak Blad chase not just victory but another chapter in their inspiring story
