Former Kenya Cup champions KCB Rugby opened their new campaign in ruthless fashion, powering past Impala RFC 87–5 at the KCB Sports Club in Nairobi on Saturday. The Bankers, who began last season with a similarly 88–5 win over South Coast Pirates, have maintained a strong grip on this fixture in recent years, winning all post-Covid meetings by convincing margins.
Speaking to Two5Four rugby about the match, KCB head coach Andrew Amonde praised his side’s discipline and execution, noting that the result reflected solid preseason preparation.
“Match Day One was a good start for us. The boys showed character and stuck to the plan. Impala is never an easy side, so getting a solid win says a lot about our preparation and mentality,” Amonde said. He added that leading the table so early is merely added motivation rather than a measure of success. “Being on top of the table this early doesn’t mean much yet. Our focus now is consistency and improving the small details as the season builds.”
Looking ahead, Amonde highlighted key areas the team aims to refine before their next outing. “We want to tighten up our structures and improve our accuracy, especially in decision-making and breakdown efficiency. We also want to sharpen our defence and reduce the lapses that gave Impala a few openings,” he explained.
He credited team unity for the strong start, noting that trust and cohesion were central to the victory. “The win came from the boys trusting each other and sticking together under pressure. We want to build on that momentum and make sure the same hunger shows in the next game.”
KCB will be set to travel to Kisumu for their second encounter where they will face Kisumu RFC this weekend.
