Following their narrow Floodlit exit, KCB Rugby is already looking ahead to the Kenya Cup campaign. Head coach Andrew Amonde believes the squad’s blend of youth and experience has set the tone for a strong comeback season.
After bowing out of the 2025 Impala Floodlit Tournament, KCB Rugby Head Coach Andrew Amonde is turning his attention to the new Kenya Cup season, expressing confidence that his side is building a solid foundation for success.
Speaking after the narrow 16–13 quarterfinal loss to Menengai Oilers, Amonde said the Floodlit tournament offered vital lessons and valuable game time for both seasoned and emerging players.
“This Floodlit tournament has been a great platform for us to assess where we are as a group,” Amonde explained. “It’s given us quality minutes, helped expose areas we need to tighten up, and allowed new and younger players to gain experience under pressure.”
He believes KCB’s blend of youth and experience will be key to their campaign. “I’m quite pleased with the balance we’re building. The returning senior players bring valuable experience, while the younger guys have injected a lot of energy and hunger into the team. You can see the competition for places growing, which pushes everyone to raise their standards.”
Looking ahead, Amonde outlined his key areas of focus in preparation for the season opener. “Our main focus over the next few weeks will be on sharpening our execution and consistency. We’ve built a solid foundation in terms of fitness and structure, but now it’s about fine-tuning the details decision-making under pressure, discipline at the breakdown, and accuracy in attack and defence,” he said.
The former Kenya Sevens captain added that maintaining intensity across the season will be crucial. “We also want to improve our game management in tight situations to make sure we close out matches better. The goal is to start the Kenya Cup strong and sustain that intensity throughout, as we push to get KCB back where it belongs at the top of Kenyan rugby.”
