Agunda Era Begins at Kenya Harlequins as 2025 Sevens Circuit Kicks Off

Kenya Harlequins head into the 2025 National Sevens Circuit under new leadership, as former player and long-time servant of the game, Patrice Agunda, takes the reins from Paul Murunga Amunavi. Murunga led Quins to a memorable 2024 season, guiding them to the overall national sevens title in 2024.

Agunda now takes on the mantle with high expectations, but insists the focus is firmly on internal growth.

“We are focusing on our own processes and holding ourselves accountable to the standards we set,” Agunda told TWO5Four Media.

“Creating a competitive environment during training while putting a huge emphasis on game understanding and the cues to look out for when playing the game.”he offered.

Despite narrowly missing out on tournament wins last season, Quins remained one of the most consistent teams. At the Kabeberi 7s, they lost a close contest to Menengai Oilers 26–21 in the knockout stages. During Christie 7s, it was Kabras Sugar who edged them out 17–12 with a late try, denying Quins a shot at the title on home soil. At Prinsloo 7s, Quins recovered to finish fifth with a 33–0 victory over hosts Nakuru RFC. Their run at Dala 7s ended in the semi-finals with a 17–0 loss to Kabras. However, the Ngong based outfit went on to clinch the Ingo 7s and Driftwood 7s to be crowned the overall circuit winners.

Agunda remains optimistic and believes in the squad’s potential, especially under the leadership of captain Richel Wangila.

“I think we have a very balanced squad. Under the leadership of Richel Wangila, I believe anything is possible,” he added.

With the 2025 season kicking off this weekend at the Driftwood 7s in Mombasa, Quins are looking to defend their overall crown and build a new legacy under Agunda. The team’s structure, discipline, and player-led culture are expected to be key pillars as the new era unfolds.
