Strathmore Leos produced a scintillating performance to dethrone KCB RFC and lift the Embu 7s crown after a convincing 31-21 victory in the final at Njukiiri Grounds.
The students got off to a flying start when Nygel Amaitsa dotted down immediately from the kickoff to set the tone at 5-0. Barely had the crowd settled before speedster Victor Mola sliced through for the second try, and with Arnold Muita slotting home the extras to take Leos 14-0 up.
Stanslaus Shokoli then added a third in a magical passage of play that left the KCB defense reeling, before Barnabas Owuor followed with yet another touchdown. Muita’s conversion pushed Strathmore into a commanding 24-0 lead.
KCB, however, showed their pedigree just before halftime. Floyd Wabwire pulled one back and Brian Wahinya added the extras to cut the gap to 24-7 at the break.
The bankers carried their momentum into the second half as Wabwire crossed the whitewash again, Wahinya converting to make it 24-14. The winger then completed his hat-trick minutes later, Wahinya once again accurate from the tee, to set up a tense finale at 24-21.
But Strathmore weren’t to be denied. Samuel Wafula delivered the decisive blow with a late try, and Muita calmly slotted the conversion to seal a famous 31-21 win for the students.
