Resilience and Teamwork: Coach Matekwa Hails Zetech Oaks After Driftwood 7s Triumph

Zetech Oaks Crowned Driftwood 7s Division Two Champions, Earn Promotion to Top TierZetech Oaks are officially headed to the big stage after powering through the Division Two bracket to win the 2025 Driftwood 7s and earn a promotion to Division One of the National Sevens Circuit second leg, Prinsloo 7s.

The Nairobi based university outfit stormed through the competition unbeaten, capping off their flawless weekend with a hard-fought 10-0 win over a gritty NYS side in the final.

Speaking to Two5Four media after the trophy lift, head coach Ramsfield Matekwa credited the team’s mental toughness and chemistry for the breakthrough performance.

“Resilience is the thing that has worked for us this tournament, composure and teamwork,” said Matekwa.

“We are looking forward to bettering our performance even more at Prinsloo Sevens next weekend. But for now, we’re going back to the drawing board to sharpen our claws.”he added.

Zetech’s campaign started strong on Day One, opening with a statement 29-12 win over Vihiga RFC. They followed it up with a 24-15 win against South Coast Pirates before grinding out a narrow 5-0 victory over Northern Suburbs to top their pool.

Come Day Two, the Oaks showed they meant business.
In the quarterfinals, they overwhelmed Homeboyz RFC 26-12. They then dismantled Mean Machine 37-0 in a semifinal masterclass.

In the final against NYS, Zetech kept their cool in a tight encounter, scoring a try in each half and shutting out their opponents.

With promotion now secured, Zetech Oaks will compete in Division One at next weekend’s Prinsloo Sevens in Nakuru.

“This group has something special,” added Matekwa. “We’ve worked hard, stayed humble, and trusted the process. Now we test ourselves among the very best.”
